The Kentville Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Engineer 1st Class and Lieutenant Joel Neily, who passed away following a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer associated with firefighting service. His passing has left an immeasurable void within the firefighting community and among the many family members, friends, colleagues, and residents whose lives he touched through his years of dedication and selfless service.
Joel proudly served the communities of Hantsport and Kentville with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment. Throughout his firefighting career, he held the respected ranks of Captain with Hantsport Fire, Lieutenant, and most recently Engineer 1st Class with Kentville Fire. Known for his professionalism, leadership, and compassionate nature, Joel stood alongside his fellow firefighters through every emergency call, training exercise, and difficult moment with strength and determination.
Beyond his service on the front lines, Joel was also a passionate advocate for firefighter health and safety. His dedication to protecting not only the public but also his fellow firefighters earned him deep respect throughout the department and the broader fire service community. Colleagues remember him not only as a firefighter but as a trusted mentor, loyal friend, and someone who inspired others through his courage and kindness.
Although cancer may have taken Joel from active service, those who knew him say his legacy will continue through the memories, lessons, laughter, and bonds shared over the years. His impact on the department and the lives around him will never be forgotten.
