The Vermont Stars Hockey community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of beloved former coach John “Johnny” Pelkey, who reportedly passed away suddenly a few days ago. His passing has left family members, friends, former players, and the entire Stars organization deeply saddened as they remember a man whose kindness, generosity, and dedication impacted countless lives over the years.
Johnny was more than a coach to the Vermont Stars program — he was one of its foundations. He joined the organization during its very first year more than two decades ago when his daughter Amanda began playing at just 10 years old. Over the years, Johnny coached multiple Stars teams, helping shape not only skilled athletes but also confident and compassionate young people. His coaching philosophy centered on encouragement, positivity, and genuine care for every player he mentored, values that became deeply woven into the identity of the Stars organization.
Beyond the rink, Johnny was widely known as an exceptionally kind and selfless individual. Friends describe him as someone who would do anything to help another person, often putting the needs of others before his own. His generosity, warm spirit, and unforgettable storytelling brought joy to everyone around him. Many fondly remember his distinctive laugh and the countless stories he shared that could instantly brighten any room.
The loss of Johnny Pelkey has created an immeasurable void within the hockey community and among all who had the privilege of knowing him. Tributes continue pouring in from former players, fellow coaches, and friends whose lives were touched by his mentorship and friendship.
Heartfelt condolences are being extended to his wife Ann, daughter Amanda, and the entire Pelkey family during this incredibly difficult time.
