The communities of Tilton and Danville are mourning the tragic loss of Steven A. Cornett, a former Tilton police chief who died early Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while working in a construction zone on Interstate 74 near Prospect Avenue in Champaign.
According to officials, the 65-year-old road worker was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer stated that preliminary findings indicate Cornett died from blunt force injuries sustained after being hit by a vehicle. Authorities say the incident occurred while road crews were working in the construction area along eastbound I-74.
Steven Cornett, who retired as Tilton Police Chief in 2017, was remembered by colleagues, friends, and community members as a respected public servant and devoted family man. Billy Wear described Cornett as “an all-around good guy” who was widely liked throughout the community.
Friends recalled Cornett’s love for deer hunting, bass fishing, and spending time with family and longtime friends. Known for his sense of humor and storytelling, he left lasting memories with those who knew him best. In retirement, Cornett worked for Dan Ribbe Trucking and also taught concealed carry classes, continuing to serve and connect with members of the community.
Mayor Wear said it is believed Cornett was helping move barriers with other workers in a designated safe lane when the tragic accident occurred. His sudden death has left many in shock and mourning.
The Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue investigating the incident. Following the crash, authorities closed portions of eastbound Interstate 74 for several hours while emergency crews responded and investigators processed the scene.
As tributes continue pouring in, loved ones remember Steven Cornett for his dedication, kindness, and years of service both in law enforcement and within his community. His passing leaves a tremendous void among family, friends, former colleagues, and everyone whose lives he touched throughout the years.
Steven A. Cornett will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
